What are bloodstained diamonds? A “blood diamond” is a diamond extracted in a war zone, then sold clandestinely to finance the armies of the “warlords”.
What is the Kimberley Process? It is an international treaty that regulates the trade in diamonds, created in 2000 in Kimberley, South Africa. The mandate is entrusted to the UN and today 69 countries, non-governmental organizations and industry operators are part of it. This treaty is supposed to prevent the introduction of bloodstained diamonds into the market, especially in Africa, but the system has many flaws and is often and unfortunately circumvented.
